Naana Neeya The Movie - Review by NST

GOLDEN Screen Cinemas (GSC) is encouraging the local Tamil film industry by screening locally produced movie Naanah Neeyah in its Klang Valley and Penang cineplexes next week.

The movie follows in the tradition of digital Tamil commercial movies made for the cinema (instead of just television) — the others being Athma (horror) and Ivanthaanda Hero (comedy) — in the past few months.

Naanah Neeyah is a two-hour comedy.

After catching the preview of the movie at GSC in Mid Valley Megamall, I was surprised to learn that this was the maiden effort of the director, Dharmavathi.
In fact, she and the lead actress, well-known singer Malarvili, are daughters of Re Shanmugam of Radio Malaysia fame, who has established himself as a multi-talented artiste (singer, composer, lyricist and dramatist).

The movie is adapted from Shanmugam’s play of the same name staged more than 30 times some 20 years ago. It delves into the rivalry, jealousy and fights that can develop when a new neighbour moves into a neighbourhood.

Kesavan, Shanmuganathan, Malarvili and Jayasudha play the two couples. One of the wives is deaf while the other is hooked on Tamil movies and TV serials. This gives rise to many comic situations.

I was surprised that the entire cast, including the children, could act so naturally.

This itself is a tribute to the director who spent RM200,000 to make this movie. She is depending on public support to recoup her investment and to begin her next project.

Since the movie is opening close to Tamil New Year (April 14), she can hope for a good turnout.

Naanah Neeyah offers plenty of laughs. Most people would have had a quarrelsome or jealous neighbour, so they will be able to relate to some of the scenes in the movie. Since one of the characters (Malarvili) is a movie freak, some famous “punch” lines from films would have added more colour to the movie and drawn more laughs.

A spin-off from the movie was a seven-song album and video costing RM100,000, released last May. The title song Naanah Neeyah, occupied the top spot in THR Raga radio hit show for some time last year. Now another song, Shankara, is topping the charts.

The songs were composed by Boy Radge (responsible for the hit music for Gana’s digital movie Ivanthaanda Hero).

Note: The movie opens on April 3.
